Jason Chin is next on my list of Children’s Book Authors Everyone Should Know. He is an author / illustrator. He was awarded the Caldecott for his work as an illustrator for WATERCRESS. I also loved his collaboration with Miranda Paul on Water is Water.Â

Author or Book Study Ideas
Reading is enough, always! But if you want to do more with a newfound or familiar favorite, here are some ideas.
Ideas for Parents and Caregivers
- Read a collection of his stories and pick your favorites.
- Read Redwoods or Grand Canyon before you take a trip there OR find them on a map and watch a documentary about National Parks.
Ideas for Teachers and Classrooms
- Rank favorite books by Jason Chin
- Watch this video with Jason Chin about how to illustrate a fact and then illustrate your own facts.Â
- Learn about the Caldecott medal, read Watercress, and do your own March Madness style book ranking contest to decide who you think should win in the next year. Melissa Stewart has a good resource for this on her site.Â
- Jason Chin’s books tend to focus on various science subjects so they lend themselves well to being included with units on things like weather, space, ecosystems and more.Â
Ideas for Librarians
- Make a shelf of books or display of Jason Chin’s books.
- Make a shelf or display on a topic including one of Jason Chin – National Parks, Weather, Outerspace, Coral Reefs, etc.Â
- Do a storytime for older children featuring some Caldecott winners, including Watercress.Â
