A sly fox is such a fun topic for a picture book. Sneaky foxes. Unaware, or at least seemingly unaware, chickens and other victims. There’s a natural tension there that makes it suspenseful and begs you to turn the page.
Foxes, therefore, also make for a playful storytime theme.

One Fox: A Counting Book Thriller
by Kate Read
I admire an author who can do a lot with few words and I adore a counting book that tells a story – this is both and it’s awesome. With carefully chosen words, ONE FOX tells an intense, suspenseful story (in which – spoiler alert! – no chickens are harmed). From “one famished fox” to the surprisingly humorous ending this is counting book perfection.
Rosie’s Walk
by Pat Hutchins
This has always been one of my favorites. It was originally published in 1968 but it is one of those classics that never seems too dated for new generations to love. It is a book about a chicken that goes for a walk around the farm and illustrations reveal that she is being stalked by a fox that keeps getting attacked or blocked by various accidents. It’s funny and brief – perfect for reading aloud to little ones.
Hattie and the Fox

Mem Fox is an amazing author of a staggering number of children’s books. This is again about a fox and a chicken. Hattie the chicken knows she sees something in the bushes but nobody else on the farm believes her. It’s a fun book and one that kids can relate to.
That’s Not a Good Idea
by Mo Willems
Mo Willems is a genius at children’s book humor and although this is less known than some of his other books it is no less silly and fun. In this one there is one again a fox targeting a chicken. Kids will love the refrain of “that’s not a good idea” and the surprise ending.
