Perspective-taking is an important skill for kids. Perspective taking or being able to see someone else’s point of view builds the foundation for empathy, conflict resolution and healthy social relationships.

Perspective-Taking Song
- If You’re Happy and You Know It but with extra emotions. My favorite verses are in this post on Bambini Travel from a unit I did on emotions. This version of the song pairs different emotions with actions that could help kids see and identify the emotion.
Perspective-Taking Ideas
Want to do more after storytime? Here are some fun perspective taking activity ideas to try with kids.
- Simple Book Based Activity on Emotions from preschoolers and up that works on naming emotions.
- “Guess the Feeling” Game This is easy and could be done as a group or in partners. Directions and 4 other ideas are in this post.
- Role Playing Activities There are a lot of different role playing ideas in this post that would work well for elementary school kids.
- Picture Their World is one of many activities on this website that work on building perspective taking skills. There are a lot of great ideas here but I love this one and the photography project for the creative opportunity to perspective take.
- Walk in My Shoes” Art Project is another creative project that’s a little more directed to work on perspective taking. This site has ideas for kids of every age, divided by age.
- Read Alternative Fairy Tales I have a whole list (booklist here) of different versions of fairy tales. My favorites are the ones that offer alternative point of views. The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! is a classic and my favorite but there are a lot of great ones on this list.
