This Book Bubbles Over: Children's Books for Teaching Science

This book literally made my brain bubble over with ideas for the classroom. It is well paced and has spare enough text that it works as a read aloud, but it also has a fount of information and inspires questions that will encourage even more learning. And it’s about bubbles, who doesn’t love bubbles.

I have never thought very deeply about bubbles. They are fun and were certainly a huge part of my toddler survival kit as both a teacher and mom, but that was about the extent of my consideration for bubbles until I read this fascinating book. Nora Nickum carefully crafted her writing with two layers of text; the first that works as a read aloud and a second paragraph of text on each page that offers more information to study. From bubble wrap and soap, to undersea volcanoes and neoprene foam, this nonfiction book leaves no bubbly science un-popped.

Ideas for the Classroom

Some ideas for the classroom:

  • Create a KNOW – WHAT TO KNOW – LEARNED chart together about bubbles.
  • Read aloud before a unit relating to bubbles.
  • Assign one page to each student. Have them read the longer paragraph, draw their own interpretation and then present what they learned about bubbles.
  • Pair the book with a bubble themed experiment.
