Moms Day Picture Books

1. Read a Book about Moms

You Are My I Love You by Maryann Cusimano Love

This sweet little board book is an adorable poem about the love between a mother and her child. It makes for a wonderful gift for new moms or as a goodnight read aloud for littles.

2. Mom or Grandma’s Choice

Let’s face it – our kiddos rule the roost on most days. At least in our house, they are usually the ones picking our goodnight stories and most of the books in between. Today it’s your choice. Not the only question is, whatever shall you choose? I’ll probably pick something from our Shirley Hughes collection

3. Read a Mommy Animal Book

Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino

This is a classic. Llama is looking for his mama. Full of fun animals and delightful rhymes, this is a great read aloud for toddlers and preschoolers.

4. Read a story about Adoption or Infertility

To the Moon and Back for You words by Emilia Bechrakis Serhant art by EG Keller

This is the book you gift to the new mom who has had a long journey to her baby. It was written by a mom who struggled through years of infertility but I think it could also work with an adoption journey. It is a gorgeous book that I wish I could have read to my twins when they were babies. The words are powerful and poignant, the illustrations are luminous and stunning. You can feel the heart of the mother pounding on these pages. A gift.

5. Read a Book with the Letter M

A Chair for My Mother by Vera B Williams

A wonderful warm story about family. Real life is painted with vivid color in this Caldecott Honor Book. A little girl who lives with her mom and her grandmother. Together they slowly save their coins to buy the perfect cozy chair for their apartment.

6. Read a Book in a Restaurant or Cafe

Mother’s Day often means Sunday morning brunch or a special dinner. Take a book along with you and read while you wait. I’m hoping something tasty is in my future this week.

7. Laura Numeroff

The New York Times best-selling children’s book, IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE, put Laura on the map. That was back in 1985 and has now gone through more than 60 printings and launched a whole series of books. That is just a small portion of Laura’s impressive catalog of picture books.

Our favorite books are her What ___ Do Best books. There is a grandparent one, aunt/uncle one, brothers/sisters one…the Mommy and Daddy one seemed perfect for this week.

What Mommies Do Best/What Daddies Do Best by Laura Numeroff

Start on one side, you will read the many things that Mommies Do Best. Get the middle and you have to flip it over to read about what Daddies Do Best. It turns out that they do the same wonderful things, just in a slightly different way.
