Book Suggestions for Week 9

Monday: Read a Book with the Letter E

Elmer by David McKee

Elmer the Elephant (obvious Es there right?!) isn’t gray like normal elephants. He is brightly colored and patchworked. The other elephants find this hilarious but Elmer is tired of everyone making fun of him. This is a fun classic and a surprise conclusion.

Tuesday: Read a Book You Can Sing

Going to the Zoo by Tom Paxton

We love, love, love this book. When I was working with toddlers I was introduced to this one and it stuck. I introduced it to my kids when they were toddlers and they still love it today. Such a fun book to sing aloud.

Wednesday: Read a Book about the Dark

Ella and Penguin Stick Together by Megan Maynor

Ella has a surprise. She has found some glow in the dark stickers to share with her friend Penguin. They are excited to try them out until they realize they need to be in the dark to make them work. Can they bravely face their fears? Maybe if they stick together. The emotions are real and on the surface in this sweet book about facing fears.

Thursday: Read a Book about Spring

Spring is Here by Will Hillenbrand

I love Will Hillenbrand’s gentle stories and illustrations for young children. There is softness to his sense of humor that is pure delight. Here Mole wakes up and smells spring. He desperately want to share Spring with Bear but, despite Mole’s best efforts, Bear will not wake up. Then he has an idea. If knocking and tickling and trumpeting don’t work, there is one more thing to try!

Friday: Read a Book about Where You Live

A Walk in New York by Salvatore Rubbino

A father takes his son to New York city for the first time in this gently illustrated tribute to the first time wonders of America’s biggest city. Together the pair explore many of the city’s most famous attractions. The author also includes various additional facts about the city in smaller text. For instance, did you know that more hot dogs are consumed in NYC than anywhere else? Or that Broadway’s American Indian name is Wickquasgeck Trail?

Saturday: Read a Book with the Letter F

The Great Fuzz Frenzy by Janet Stevens and Susan Stevens Crummel

Underground there is a happy group of prairie dogs until one day a mysterious fuzzy thing rolls into their hole. They hesitantly explore and their fear turns into curiosity and eventually greed. It is a true frenzy down under ground. This book is silly and has a sweet ending – along with lots of F fun.

Sunday Author Spotlight: Karen Katz

Ten Tiny Babies by Karen Katz

My daughter loves all things baby and all books by Karen Katz (author of Where is Baby’s Belly Button among others). This counting book counts babies 1 – 10 as they parade through play time, bath, and prepare for bed. It is filled with Katz’s typical colorful illustrations, bouncy language, and diverse babies of all types. It is a great book to read before bed, which I can attest to after a week straight of bedtime readings.
